Travelling to Coimbra
How to get to Coimbra
Coimbra is served by two international airports: Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO). The total connection time to Coimbra is practically the same, whether by car or public transport.
By train (see timetables here)
From Lisbon airport (LIS)
Arrivals at Lisbon airport can be made by metro (8 min journey, €2), or by UBER/taxi (5 min journey, around €8) to the "Gare do Oriente" train station. From there, take the long-distance train ("Alfa Pendular" or "Intercidades") to "Coimbra-B". Trains (20€-25€, for 2nd class) leave on average every hour and take less than two hours to arrive at Coimbra-B station.
If you are staying in downtown Coimbra, you can take the connecting train to “Coimbra-A”. In any case, you can use an UBER/taxi (5€-7€) to transport from Coimbra-B station to the city center or to the University.
From Porto airport (OPO)
Arrivals in Porto can be made by metro (37 min journey, €2) or UBER/taxi (20 min journey, €15-30) to the "Campanhã" train station. From there, take the long-distance train ("Alfa Pendular" or "Intercidades") to "Coimbra-B". Trains (€14-€18, for 2nd class) leave approximately every 45 minutes and take around an hour to reach the Coimbra-B station to the city center.
If you are staying in downtown Coimbra, you can take the connecting train to “Coimbra-A”. In any case, you can use an UBER/taxi (5€-7€) or to the University.
By bus
There is a door-to-door service, connecting the two airports to Coimbra. Booking is available here (€43 to/from Lisbon and €36 to/from Porto).
There are also direct buses (https://www.flixbus.pt) from Porto Airport to Coimbra.
Bus services between Coimbra and most Portuguese cities are also available on the national express network (https://rede-expressos.pt/).
By car
It is not necessary to rent a car to travel to and from Coimbra, but if you choose this option, expect approximately 1h30 travel time from Porto (OPO) and 2h00 from Lisbon (LIS) to the center of Coimbra.
How to get around in Coimbra
Coimbra is a small city and can be easily explored on foot. However, the walk to the University is steep, especially if you go up from the center (downtown) of Coimbra. In these cases, you can use municipal buses or (for the more adventurous) electric scooters spread throughout the city.
